- LOCATION: Cozumel is an island located just off the Yucatan Peninsula
- in the Western Caribbean. Our hotel and all civilization on the island
- is located on the western side, facing the mainland. Observing is
- planned for the eastern side of the island, 20 miles from any lights on
- the island itself. To the southeast, where Halley will appear, there is
- nothing but ocean for over 1000 miles. The observing site and skies
- will be suitably dark for general observing as well as Halley-watching.
-
- TOUR PLAN: A block of rooms has been reserved at the Hotel Sol Caribe,
- a 4-star hotel on the beach. A block of seats has also been reserved
- on Mexicana Airlines, leaving Miami at 2:40 PM on April 5th. We have
- a professional travel agent as tour co-ordinator for all persons joining
- us. Arrangements have been made for several mini-buses to support the
- nightly observing trips on Cozumel. Chuck will share a telescope with
- the group for part of each evening, and devote one camera (and film)
- fully to a group photo effort for the week. A sumptuous buffet-style
- banquet is planned for our last night on the island. No definite plans
- have been made for the days - you are free to do whatever you enjoy:
- tour the Mayan ruins on the island, rent a motorbike and explore, go
- snorkeling or scuba diving, deep sea fishing, shopping in the village,
- or just lie by the pool or on the beach. There will be ample
- opportunity for socializing with your fellow astronomers, as well.
